Ofcom makes sure that people in the UK get the best from their communications services and are protected from scams and sharp practices, while ensuring that competition can thrive.

- a universal postal service is provided in the UK - this means a six days a week, universally priced delivery and collection service across the country; and

Genre: Sci Fi. This film was the first science fiction film and therefore set the expectations of what was expected in these films.
Editing Techniques used and the effect on the scene:
- The editing techniques used in this clip are editing transitions like fade in and fade out to introduce new scenes, overlapping dissolves and stop motion photography and moved filming from mundane single action shorts to narrative. There is little to no narrative in this film.
- He also used trick photography with superimposed images, dissolves and jump cuts, he depicted many memorable, whimsical old-fashioned images: The effect of these helped to make the film more realistic.
- Melies uses a dream sequence with a dissolve. The effect of the dissolve helped to show the audience that it was no longer the reality of the character.
- Melies also uses a jump cut shot for a a scene in the court of. The sense of wonder that the film illicit comes from Méliès' intricate set design, consisting of painted backgrounds, animation, and in-camera effects.
- He developed the art of special effects, including double exposure, actors performing with themselves over split screens, and use of the dissolve and fade.
- He also pioneered the art of film editing. The sets or scenery backdrops in the film are simple, painted flats. It has all the elements that characterize the science-fiction genre: adventurous scientists, a futuristic space voyage, special effects such as superimpositions, and strange aliens in a far-off place.
- If Melies used cut in the action shots this would of helped to progress the narrative along. However it would have generate a completely different effect. If Melies had used parellel editing this would have shown two alternate scenes happening at the time to either mis lead the audience on the narrative or to help show the narrative to generate a meaning between characters. This would not have been appropriate in this clip as there is not two storylines happening in the film.

Brian's lessons Friday 25/02/16
Hi everyone, by the end of today's lessons you need to have completed a written article posted on the blog which focuses on editing for Unit 9.
Specifically, I want you to write an article based on, and including research about Early Cinema and Editing. The following is what you need to research and put in your article:
1. The article should be approx 500 - 750 words in length.
2. The article should include images (as magazine articles do) from films you are talking about.
3. Research Film with no editing circa 1870's film. Find out who was an early pioneer (inventor) of film and include them in your article as well as using my examples below.
4. Find out about and write about the Lumiere Brothers and their involvement in Film. Watch their films and write in the article about how they would have been ground breaking and innovative in their day!
See below: (1896)
(1895)

Be sensible here! What do these films show you? Talk about how the filming is static and there is no editing in the early days. Why not why do you think? How would audiences have seen this?
Then this happened in 1902...
Melies (1902) film titled: 'A Trip to the Moon'
look at all the editing moments and comment on them
Remember you have an article to write for Total Film on the beginnings of editing (500-750 words)
copy and paste the header of Total film and write in columns just as they do in reality and complete your article. The best one will win a prize when I see you next week!
Good luck and do not go until you are complete!
